Me & My Friends - Guelph - BSS Social Skills Group

Me and My Friends is designed to develop richer social and play skills, focusing on learning how to be a good friend. During our group, your child will have the opportunity to build and expand on their socials skills with novel peers by practicing greetings with each other, learning how to start and engage in conversation with others, sharing and taking turns, understanding non-verbal communication.

To improve conversation and friendship skills through:

• Behaviour Skills Training on weekly topics (instruction, modelling, rehearsal, feedback)
• Prompting and reinforcement to teach priority goals each session
• Data collection to assess acquisition of priority goals

Group Goals:

• Getting the attention of a peer before starting a conversation (e.g., facing the person, giving eye contact, etc.)
• Staying on topic for at least 3-4 conversational exchanges with a peer
• Labelling feelings in self and others by saying, “I feel ______” or “do you feel _____?”
• Taking turns during a game
• Inviting a friend to play
• Using a strategy to decide who gets to go first in a game
• Accepting losing a game by saying “good game” or something similar

Families will receive a summary of recommendations outlining the strategies developed through each week of group to continue to apply your learning in other settings. By registering for this group, you are committing to attending all session dates.

Dates: 4:30-6:30pm weekly on Thursdays in Guelph from April 20th to June 22nd, 2023
