Advanced Social Communication - Cambridge - BSS Social Skills Group
KidsAbility's Advanced Social Communication group is based on the Social Thinking curriculum, Thinking
About You, Thinking About Me (Michelle Garcia, 2007). Participants
will expand their preliminary learn about social problem-solving within the context
of relevant social scenarios with peer, and how to utilize this information to understand
and monitor their own responses accordingly. During this group, your child will
learn how to understand the point of view of others, begin formulating language
to communicate socially with peers about topics of shared interest, and
understand social conventions related to specific environments and contexts.
Instructor Therapists will guide participants to develop social communication
skills through reading the non-verbal cues of others, maintaining conversations
and having empathy for others.
To improve social/peer interactions through:
- Behaviour Skills
Training on topics (instruction, modelling, rehearsal, feedback)
- Prompting and
reinforcement to teach priority goals each session
- Data collection
to assess acquisition of priority goals
Group Goals:
- Demonstrates an
understanding of expected vs. unexpected behaviours in a given social situation
- Engages in a
balanced, on-topic questions for at least 3 exchanges with a peer
- Reads non-verbal
cues of others (facial expressions, body language) to identify how that
person is feeling and/or adjusts their own behaviour accordingly
Families will receive a summary of recommendations
outlining the strategies developed through each week of group to continue to
apply your learning in other settings. By registering for this group, you are
committing to attending all session dates.
Dates: Mondays 4:30-6:30, weekly in Cambridge, April 17th-June 26th, 2023. Please note, there will be no sessions on April 10th or May 22nd, 2023 due to statutory holidays.
