Advanced Social Communication - Cambridge - BSS Social Skills Group

KidsAbility's Advanced Social Communication group is based on the Social Thinking curriculum, Thinking About You, Thinking About Me (Michelle Garcia, 2007). Participants will expand their preliminary learn about social problem-solving within the context of relevant social scenarios with peer, and how to utilize this information to understand and monitor their own responses accordingly. During this group, your child will learn how to understand the point of view of others, begin formulating language to communicate socially with peers about topics of shared interest, and understand social conventions related to specific environments and contexts. Instructor Therapists will guide participants to develop social communication skills through reading the non-verbal cues of others, maintaining conversations and having empathy for others.

To improve social/peer interactions through:

  • Behaviour Skills Training on topics (instruction, modelling, rehearsal, feedback)
  • Prompting and reinforcement to teach priority goals each session
  • Data collection to assess acquisition of priority goals

Group Goals:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of expected vs. unexpected behaviours in a given social situation
  • Engages in a balanced, on-topic questions for at least 3 exchanges with a peer
  • Reads non-verbal cues of others (facial expressions, body language) to identify how that person is feeling and/or adjusts their own behaviour accordingly

Families will receive a summary of recommendations outlining the strategies developed through each week of group to continue to apply your learning in other settings. By registering for this group, you are committing to attending all session dates.

Dates: Mondays 4:30-6:30, weekly in Cambridge, April 17th-June 26th, 2023. Please note, there will be no sessions on April 10th or May 22nd, 2023 due to statutory holidays.
